The first teaser for the upcoming Godzilla vs Kong movie, which is officially titled Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, just dropped, and it seems like a new, deadly monster is in the mix.
The teaser shows a menacing Titan monster with glowing blue eyes sitting on a throne surrounded by bones. When the camera zooms out, though, we get our first looks at Godzilla and Kong. Well, our first look at their glowing skulls, that is.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which is slated for a 2024 release date from Legendary and Warner Bros. Discovery, will follow King Kong and Godzilla uniting against a new threat from Hollow Earth. The film will also reportedly dive deeper into the origins of the Titans and Skull Island, furthering the mythology of the Monsterverse.
Legendary's Monsterverse began back in 2014 with Godzilla. A direct sequel to that movie, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, debuted in 2019 and expanded the universe with such monsters as Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah. King Kong's debut to the Monsterverse came in 2017 with King Kong: Skull Island, a war-inspired look at King Kong's home terrain. All of these films were inevitably building up to one mega showdown: Godzilla vs Kong.
Fans were graced with that matchup in 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong, which did relatively well at the box office despite immense uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film was also generally well-liked for it's over-the-top action sequences
The end of Godzilla vs. Kong saw our two favorite kaiju monsters team up to defeat MechaGodzilla, but don't expect the two Titans to be all buddy-buddy. The duo did nearly kill each other, after all, and there's surely some bad blood between them.
